IC Malaysian Society featured in Imperial College website

We were pleasantly surprised that the Imperial College Alumni contacted us for our story on meeting up with Imperial freshers just before they fly off to the big city of London, to pass them tips we’ve gathered over our years studying at Imperial. While we thought that would be a great idea, an even better idea came to us- why not get the current Malaysian society at IC, who organized the event themselves, to share their experience? After all, they were the ones who put in the effort, while we support them from the background, both financially and through various advice. Kudos to the current Msoc team, you’ve done a great job placing your story and pictures in the face of the Imperial College website!

Freshers at Sentosa

As the College gears up for the start of term, alumni associations and Imperial College Union societies linked up to prepare new international students for studying at Imperial and living in London.

In Malaysia, Imperial College Union Malaysian Society held a three day camp in Port Dickson for freshers to get to know each other and for current Malaysian students to pass on tips and advice. Since many international students will be travelling to the UK alone, current students were keen to share pre-departure hints, what to expect upon arrival in London and settling in at the College. Carol Ann Cheah, about to begin a degree in Bioengineering, said: “I guess now we won’t be making the rookie error of flagging a Hackney cab from the airport fresh off our flights!”

Around 90 freshers and 5 alumni attended a similar event in Hong Kong, organised by Imperial College Chinese Society. Students were keen to quiz alumni from Imperial College Alumni Association in Hong Kong (ICAAHK)about their experience at the College and to find out a bit more about what Imperial students get up to once they’ve graduated. The Vice Chairman of ICAAHK, Ken Ho (Civil Engineering 1984, MSc 1985), talked about the Association’s events and activities, and also introduced the ICAAHK Scholarship and its application requirements.

Imperial College Singapore Society (ICSS) organised a medieval themed event at Sentosa beach resort for freshers to mark the start of their Imperial journey. Joshua Goh, President of ICSS, described the event as “an opportunity for freshers to meet and get to know the people they’ll be going to Imperial with”. You can find lots of photos of the event on their Facebook page.

A full program of Welcome Week activities can be found on the New Students website. Don’t forget to tweet @imperialcollege using the #ImpCol hashtag if you have news you’d like to share.

ICUMS Malaysian Night 2011 – The Captain’s Journal

It has been one month since the Imperial College Union Malaysian Society’s Malaysian Night 2011 entitled The Captain’s Journal- Hero: Wanted. The guys over at ICUMS sent us a report worth sharing out, noting that this was done by students. This is what the President of 2010/2011 had to say:

We are really grateful to have the strong support and financial contribution from the alumni. Without your kind help, our event would not have been as successful as it was.

To which we replied:

We are so happy that it was a success. But we were always confident that anything put on by you and your team will be successful.

Please find their programme booklet here for your convenience – [download id=”1″]

The aforementioned report can be found here, detailing the process they went through to make the 2 day event happen with 1,200 turnout (that’s a full house!) – [download id=”2″]

Other sponsors include the following below, and we would like to congratulate them for an event well done!

Meanwhile we would like to congratulate the incoming committee of 2011/2012, led by Sheela Ratnam!

Bio-inspired Materials for Regenerative Medicine and Biosensing

Professor Molly Stevens, Department of Materials and Institute for Biomedical Engineering, Imperial College London

Abstract

A disagreeable side effect of longer life-spans is the failure of one part of the body – the knees, for example – before the body as a whole is ready to surrender. The search for replacement body parts has fueled the highly interdisciplinary field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. This talk will provide an overview of our recent developments in bio-inspired nanomaterials for tissue regeneration and sensing. Bio-responsive nanomaterials are of growing importance with potential applications including drug delivery, diagnostics and tissue engineering. Conceptually novel approaches to real-time monitoring of enzyme action using modular peptide functionalized nanoparticles will be presented. The ability to control topography and chemistry at the nanoscale also offers exciting possibilities for stimulating growth of new tissue through the development of novel nanostructured scaffolds that mimic the nanostructure of the tissues in the body. Recent developments in this context will be discussed.

Biography

Molly Stevens is currently Professor of Biomedical Materials and Regenerative Medicine and the Research Director for Biomedical Materials at Imperial College. She joined Imperial in 2004 after a Postdoctoral training in the field of tissue engineering with Professor Robert Langer in the Chemical Engineering Department at MIT. In 2009 she was awarded the Jean Leray Award from the European Society for Biomaterials, in 2007 the prestigious Conference Science Medal from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and in 2005 the Philip Leverhulme Prize for Engineering. She has also recently been recognised by the TR100, a compilation of the top innovators, under the age of 35, who are transforming technology – and the world with their work. Her previous awards include the Ronald Belcher Memorial Lecture Award from the Royal Society of Chemistry (2000) and both the Janssen Prize and the UpJohn Prize for academic excellence and research. Research in regenerative medicine within her group includes the directed differentiation of stem cells, the design of novel bioactive scaffolds and new approaches towards tissue regeneration. She has developed novel approaches to tissue engineering that are likely to prove very powerful in the engineering of large quantities of human mature bone for autologous transplantation as well as other vital organs such as liver and pancreas, which have proven elusive with other approaches. This has led to moves to commercialise the technology (she is the co-founder of RepRegen and InTiGen) and set-up a clinical trial for bone regeneration in humans. In  2009 she awarded the ACES Academic Entrepreneur pan-European Amgen Life Sciences Award in recognition of her tremendous work in transforming outstanding science into innovative medical products. In the field of nanotechnology the group has current research efforts in exploiting specific biomolecular recognition and self-assembly mechanisms to create new dynamic nano-materials, biosensors and drug delivery systems.
